After tasting a strong grappa made from Barbera grape pomaces, drawing it from an oak "caratlein" (a small barrel), Bartolomeo Gualco found it so enjoyable and full of personality, that he decided that it deserved a unique name.
He invited some notable characters from the town (Soldi, a notary; Farina, the mayor; father Simonelli, the priest; Ferretti, a lawyer; Balbi, a pharmacist; and …it is said… the marshal of the Carabinieri police force too), so that they could rack their brains out all together and come up with a worthy name for such quality.
However, after a night of libation and appreciation for the work of the “grappa master”, his guests staggered back home, completely forgetting the reason why they had been brought together: to “christen” the product.
After sunrise, alone and accompanied by his red eyes and a lack of creativity, stripped from him by his hangover from the night before, Bartolomeo decided to call it "Grappa without a Name".
